The Island of La Palma welcomes this upcoming July the 25th its 1st Mountain Competition, a test 100% trails, 100% natural protected areas and throughout the country´s youngest territory.
This territory has a protection rate of 52%. Over 1000 km of approved trail, an altitude of 2426 m and a landscape without comparison, is also the ideal place to develop a mountain competition such as the Transvulcania 09, with 83.3 km of trek and more than 8500 m of accumulated unevenness.
During the tour, throughout the whole path of “Gran Recorrido GR 131”, the participants would be able to enjoy a sunrise in the middle of Los Volcanoes Route, to tour around the boundaries of Parque Nacional de la Caldera and enjoy the fabulous views offered to us by the highest points of the island, next to the Astrophysical Observatory of the Roque de Los Muchachos.
Modalities Transvulcania 09
The highest aim of Transvulcania 2009 is to facilitate the participation in this event, which is why we have created different forms, depending on the physical demands and the possibility to enjoy them:
I Island of la Palma Mountain Ultra-marathon
With the start point situated at sea level, next to the Faro (light-house) of Fuencaliente in the most southern part of the island, the challenge to go forward in between the volcanic ash from the path of the Volcanoes begins, to reach the dorsal that crosses the Island from North to South and to crown the Roque de Los Muchachos, the highest peak of the island, with 2426 m of altitude.
After surpassing more than 2400 meters of altitude, the descent begins. In scarcely 20Km, it again reaches the zero level at the Port of Tazacorte, where the sea breeze will help participants to undertake the last 5 km climb to the finish line at Plaza de Los Llanos de Aridane.

This modality, on which the start and first stretch is shared out with the I Ultra marathon, runs one of the most travelled trails on the island, the "Route of the Volcanoes", walking through volcanic ash in the badlands that make up the country´s youngest territory.
After reaching the highest acme in "The Deseadas” 1931 metres. There are only 8 Kilometres of downward slope remaining to reach the target spot in the recreational area Refugio de El Pilar”.
Technical Data:

II Island hiking gathering.
The Island II Hikers gathering will walk 18.7 miles, with less physical demanding, with the aim to enhance among the local population, the knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment of the island's natural heritage, throughout the trails.
This new edition is intended to increase the participation achieved in the previous one, with a new route through Great Trail Route (Gran Recorrido) GR130 - Camino Real de la Costa, in the stage between the town of Tijarafe and the town of Los Llanos de Aridane taking variant of the GR 131 to the Port of Tazacorte and again on GR 130 to the finish line in the Square of Spain Plaza de España in Los Llanos de Aridane.
