If you want to register your tests with the BCU and get the
official certificates, you will need to additionally pay the test
processing fees to BCU:
These fees depend on if you are a member of BCU or not:
3-star: 20 GBP (24 €) non-member, 10 GBP (12 €) member
2-star: 5 GBP (7 €)
These fees can be paid in cash (Euros or GBP's) to the instructors at
the end of the training to be paid to the BCU as the papers are turned
in.

2-Star and 3-Star Sea tests are currently good for life

If you are already a BCU member, bring your membership
card with you. If you want to join, you should do it on line
at www.bcu.org.uk

Fee reimbursement:

Several kayak clubs will participate in advanced training
costs for their participants (and expect you to share your
knowledge at the club in return).

Gear: Participants shall bring their own kayaks & cold water
paddling gear. Parts of the training will involve getting wet,
so dry spare clothes are needed.

Please note, that if you are paddling a kayak, which has a
rudder, the rudder will have to be deactivated for the training
and test. Additionally, some Active Rudder –type rudders
have proven to be impossible to use in e.g. reverse paddling,
even if they were deactivated from active control.

Paddling gear should include at least the following:
- Sea kayak with adequate flotation and rigging
- Paddle and spare paddle
- Sprayskirt
- Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
- Bailing device (hand pump recommended)
- Towline with carabiner and quick-release
- Noseplug & swimming goggles (if you prefer to wear these in
rolling practice, etc.)
- Compass (deck, hand or both)

- Chart case + chart of the training area
- Helmet (for surf landings)
- Kayak repair kit
- 1st Aid Kit
- Knife
- Whistle
- Exposure bag/Tarp/Tent, etc emergency shelter
- Snack on the water during training
- Means to produce a warm drink (Thermos, Trangia, etc.)
- Lunch, snack, etc. is not provided so bring your own
- Paddlefloat (if you need one for self-rescue)

Other items:
- Paddling log, etc. to show evidence of the required level of
experience (for 3 Star Sea)
- Communication device (cellphone in a waterproof bag and/or
Marine VHF)

Syllabus: You will find the BCU class contents and test requirements
published at the BCU website. Please also note that use of
rudders is not allowed in the skills test. A kayak may have a
rudder, but it may not be used.

Passing/not passing the test:
Passing a BCU Star test requires that the accessors see AT
LEAST ONE successfully performed attempt of each
required technique on BOTH SIDES. If the candidate will
not quite pass 3-Star criteria, it is often possible to pass the
candidate on the 2-Star level.

Most challenging techniques for 3-Star candidates in the past
have included:
- High Brace (with gunwales vertical)
- Sculling for support (with gunwales vertical)
- High Brace on the move (with gunwales vertical)

Most people find these techniques are more challenging than
an eskimo roll, so mastering them essentially requires a
quality roll on both sides. However, we are going to practice
them during the class, and there is a good possibility of you
learning them to the required level during the 3-Star training,
if you already had beginnings and a roll.
